ABD and Iran agree 15-day ceasefire in historic Orta Doğu conflict
U.S. and Iran announced a surprise 15-day ceasefire via Pakistan's mediation, ending 40 days of continuous bombardment. Turkey's Foreign Ministry welcomed the decision, while İran's 10-point proposal includes demands for ABD military withdrawal and İsrail Gaza ceasefire. Hürmüz Boğazı (Strait of Hormuz) reopened for commercial shipping under 'conditional traffic' arrangements.
Editor's note
Talk about a 180-degree turn. I watched the Hürriyet headlines jump from bomb threats to 'victory declarations' in 24 hours. Still not sure how this holds, but at least the Hürmüz Strait is open again — finally.
10 arrests made in İsrail Consulate vehicle attack
A 3-man team opened fire on İsrail Consulate guards during midnight shift change in Beşiktaş. One suspect killed, 2 injured, and 10 others later arrested including foreign nationals. Investigation points to DEAŞ (ISIS) links.
Editor's note
Avoid İstinye Park area tonight. That consulate compound's seeing more security than a nuclear site.
Local Expression
Turks usually refer to the İsrail Consulate as 'the red building' in local context
Borsa İstanbul jumps 3.34% on ceasefire optimism
BIST 100 opened at 13,353.94 points (13,000 levels reached for first time since November 2024). Gold prices stabilized at 1,630 TL/gram, and USDTRY dipped to 8.92 in early trading.
Editor's note
Finally, some good news for the currency markets. Though let's not pop the champagne just yet — last time I saw this kind of optimism, it lasted exactly 4 days before the next devaluation.
France adopts Turkey's 'gold repatriation model'
Fransa announced it's bringing its New York gold reserves to Paris, mirroring Turkey's 2018-2020 strategy under Berat Albayrak. 15% of Türkiye's foreign reserves now consist of domestic-minted gold bars.
Local Expression
The 'gold repatriation model' refers to Türkiye's 2018-2020 initiative to diversify away from U.S. dollar holdings
Sivas flood emergency: 10 villages cut off by overflowing baraj
Rain events since 3 April caused Kursunlu Baraj to exceed capacity by 30%. Six villages in Divriği district declared emergency as water reached rooftops in 4 communities.
Editor's note
Yet another baraj disaster. When will we learn? Every 3 weeks, another village becomes an island — this time it's Sivas, next could be Amasya.
Emekli uzman çavuş commits family murder-suicide in Ankara
Ali Fuat Uzunoğlu (77) shot and killed his wife and 18-year-old daughter before taking his own life. Daughter's corpse found dismembered in 4 different waste bins.
Editor's note
Ghastly enough that I skipped reading the body details. Another tragedy for Turkey's mental health system which remains underfunded.
Karagümrük organize crime operation nets 19 arrests
İstanbul Jandarma, coordinated with multiple provinces, arrested 19 members of Nuri Ergin's cartel including 3 in İstanbul prisons. Operation involved 156 police, 83 cars, and 7 helicopters.
Local Expression
Karagümrük (Black Gold) refers to smuggled crude oil
UEFA Şampiyonlar Ligi: Arda Güler criticized for late substitution
Beşiktaş youth graduate drew ire among Spanish media for exiting Real Madrid's 2-1 loss to Bayern Münih. Hattrick goal by Jamal Musiala (19) overshadowed young Türk's performance.
Editor's note
Let the 19-year-old play, people. He's still finding his feet in Europe — unlike certain 'senior' players with similar reputations.
77-year-old İsmail Aslan graduates with bachelor's degree
Trabzon resident completed 4-year KTÜ Beşikdüzü program after completing primary and secondary education in 2022. Thesis title: 'Golden Age of the Turkish Economy in 2026'.
Editor's note
Finally, a story that makes me feel old. This man's determination would make Socrates proud.
