A significant cold front from the Balkans is hitting the country. A yellow alert has been issued for 44 provinces, including Istanbul, with forecasts of rain, sleet, and freezing temperatures.
Corruption sweeps municipal offices in Istanbul and Mersin
It’s been a rough morning for local government officials. In Istanbul, 21 people were detained in an investigation into bribery and zoning irregularities at the Üsküdar Municipality. Meanwhile, down in Mersin, police raided the Yenişehir Municipality, resulting in 30 detention warrants for similar allegations of bid-rigging and bribery.
Editor's note
It seems the anti-corruption wave is hitting multiple municipalities simultaneously. Whether you're in Üsküdar or Mersin, the message from the authorities is loud and clear: they are tightening the screws on municipal permits and public tenders.
Drastic anti-tobacco measures proposed
The government is moving toward a total ban on tobacco sales by January 1, 2040. In the immediate future, a new proposal heading to Parliament aims to ban smoking in all outdoor seating areas of restaurants and cafes, and prohibit food and beverage service in designated smoking zones. Furthermore, cash transactions for tobacco products will be banned.
Editor's note
Good luck to the coffee shops in Kadıköy or Cihangir managing their terraces under these rules. A 2040 'no-sale' target is ambitious, but for now, it's just going to make life very complicated for venue owners.
Family tragedy in Zeytinburnu
A devastating incident occurred in Istanbul’s Zeytinburnu district, where a 53-year-old man shot his ex-wife and their 19-year-old daughter. The young woman lost her life, and the mother is currently in critical condition. The perpetrator is currently on the run, and a massive search is underway.
Editor's note
Hard to find words for this one. Another domestic violence tragedy that leaves the neighborhood reeling.
Temporary ceasefire in the Middle East, but tension remains high
While reports of a 15-day ceasefire between the US/Israel and Iran have circulated, the situation remains extremely fragile. Israeli officials have warned that they could resume hostilities at any moment. Meanwhile, Turkish diplomatic channels, which were involved in the mediation process, remain under intense international scrutiny.
Editor's note
The mood here is 'wait and see.' Everyone is hoping the ceasefire holds, but looking at the headlines, it feels like it could break at the slightest provocation.
Turkish national rowing success
Batuhan Taş, a 28-year-old from Izmir who uses a prosthetic leg, has made headlines for his meteoric rise in professional rowing. Having only started the sport six months ago, he has already won the Turkish Salon Rowing Championship and is now aiming for the 2028 Summer Olympics.
Editor's note
Finally, a genuinely inspiring story in the middle of a heavy news cycle. Keep an eye on this guy; his determination is something else.
